Eric Stonestreet, the guy who made that video of himself cutting the string on a little girl’s balloon in California Adventure, is on The Tonight Show. They showed the video, and the audience started booing him.

I was waiting for him to explain how it was all set up in advance, and it was just a joke, that the kid ended up with two or three balloons for being a part of the gag.

He didn’t do that. He just moved on to another topic.

I really wanted to believe that it was a pre-planned gag, but the fact that he had a chance to explain and didn’t leads me to believe that he was just being a complete jerk and that Disney should probably ban him from their properties.

Even if he is on a popular sitcom that airs on Disney’s ABC network.

OK, but really, 300 calories per egg is a GIGANTIC stretch.

Even a medium-sized fried egg tops out at about 92 calories. If he’s eating them raw, the same size egg is 63 calories (source).

So if he’s downing them raw (and wouldn’t a man like Gaston do just that?), that’s 3,780 calories for five dozen eggs (63x60-3,780). Nowhere near 18,000.

And 3,780 calories is actually reasonable for someone Gaston’s size who spends as much time as Gaston apparently does showing off his strength.

I ran some numbers — I guessed 250 pounds for Gaston’s weight, and a body fat range of 10-14%, with the activity level that he would probably expend being that of an athlete in training (juggling beer barrels uses up energy), and based on that, this site says Gaston would actually be burning 4,899 calories per day.

So not only would it be reasonable for Gaston to eat five dozen eggs, he’s still for 1,100 calories that he can save for dinner, or for maybe cooking up some of those eggs in lard.

Granted, Gaston is a fictional character, so I realize that arguments over the merits of his diet aren’t exactly important in the long run. And I may be no dietician but I wouldn’t recommend switching to a five-dozen-egg diet without consulting your physician (in other words, don’t sue me if you try this diet and have a heart attack as a result).

But it takes a lot of energy to be the town show-off. Let him have his eggs. After all, (spoiler alert), he doesn’t make it to the end of the movie, so he may as well enjoy his food while he’s alive.

Fun fact, I have a green foil star balloon that I was given at the zoo and it’s still fully inflated without ever being refilled.

Funner fact? I was two years old when I got it, making it a 16 year old balloon.

I may be carrying a balloon that is older than a fair few of my followers right now.

Disney’s River Country Water Park
On the shore of Bay Lake, Walt Disney World Florida

River Country, Disney World’s first water park, was opened on June 20, 1976. On Thursday, August 28, 1980 a sad story of a young boy’s death was reported in newspapers. A rare but deadly disease caused by an amoeba found in Florida’s fresh-water lakes took an 11 year old boy’s life after he spent his vacation at River Country. At this time, this boy was the fourth victim of this disease in Florida, but the only one linked to River Country. The disease attacks the nervous system and the brain. Officials reported in the article that Disney World was not to blame due to the fact that the amoeba can bread in any freshwater lake during hot weather. Photos and maps of River Country showed that the park had two bodies of water. The smaller one was chlorinated swimming pool water, and the larger half seemed to be a natural cove, connected to Bay Lake, Disney’s largest natural lake on property. There was never another disease related death in River Country due to Disney doing everything they possibly could to not have a repeat of the tragedy.

In the 1990’s, Disney banned all swimming in its lakes. The park closed at the end of the season, as it usually did, in 2001. When the time came in 2002 to reopen, it didn’t. It is said that the reasoning behind Disney’s decision to not reopen was due to a new Florida law prohibiting the use of natural water bodies and requiring chlorination in all water parks. River Country never reopened.

I hadn’t heard about the boy dying in 1980. That’s really sad. Glad it wasn’t repeated in the 21 years after that!

As much as I’m sad that I never got to experience River Country personally, it certainly helps me understand why it’s no longer open.

[EDIT]: Yesterland disputes the closure being due to a new Florida law, calling it purely a “business decision.”

My dad was a Klingon in this when went to Universal Studios Hollywood when I was a kid. I think we still have the VHS tape somewhere.

My older sister was in this show once too (all I remember is her being “beamed,” which you see in this video at 3:38 — they did it live on stage and I never figured out how and my sister refused to tell me). Our family was too cheap to buy the tape, though.

This show took place where Shrek 4-D is now.

An homage to the Twilight Zone episode “A Things About Machines,” in which Bartlett Finchley abuses machines and thinks that they are conspiring against him.

He’s right. The machines don’t like being abused.*

His typewriter types out this message to him, his electric razor attacks him, even his car is out for revenge.

I love that this is in the Tower of Terror.

Strange as it is to think, these murals will look bizarrely alien/foreign as being part of Disneyland to some Disney fans here - admittedly, they seemed even to me not to have much to do with Tomorrowland, where they once lived, but I always enjoyed them all the same.

Collectively titled ‘The Spirit of Creative Energies Among Children’,
these two murals were designed (of course) by Mary Blair, the artist responsible for the look of It’s A Small World and designer of the giant Grand Canyon/Southwest tile mural at the Contemporary at Walt Disney World. They debuted in 1967, gracing (top image) the Circlevision 360 building and (lower image) the Adventure Thru Inner Space building.

The Inner Space mural lasted till 1986, when it was replaced with a scene of deep space and Starspeeders and the Death Star, to herald the opening of Star Tours. Circlevision’s mural vanished in 1997, with the advent of Disneyland’s not very successful ‘New Tomorrowland’.

It is unknown if any portion of these murals remain intact at Disneyland, though it seems rather unlikely - sadly, all too easy to imagine the tiles being carelessly ripped down rather than left in place beneath exterior of the new artistic piece or removed with care to preserve them. These were eras before Disney park fans were both versed in much obscure company history as an overall group and were able to quickly and collectively compare notes/organize and speak out in defense of historical elements being saved, which came into being via the Internet: there were Disneyland news and update sites in ‘98, but they were just getting started with more organized fan-based message forums and the like when the second mural was already removed or covered over.

Before I knew who Mary Blair was, I used to think of these as the “It’s a Small World” murals. And the narrator on the PeopleMover would say “As we near the PeopleMover station, you can see colorful murals celebrating the joyous spirit of children everywhere — a reminder that Tomorrow will be built by our youth.”

Now our Tomorrow will be built by StarSpeeders,
